Anita Southard

Full Spectrum Doula

About Me

Hi, I'm Anita Mieko, and my path to becoming a doula grew directly out of my own journey into motherhood. I'm a mother of two boys, born eight years apart later in life. Both of my pregnancies were high-risk, carried through difficult and stressful circumstances, and before my first son was born, I experienced three pregnancy losses, so anxiety was a constant companion on my journey.

As the eldest of three girls, I had no sibling experience to lean on, and I often felt deeply isolated. I also didn't know that doulas existed; they simply weren't as common back then. My first labor was long and hard, ending in an emergency C-section. My son was born full-term and healthy, but the experience left me with lasting trauma.

Eight years later, at 40, after being told I wouldn't be able to have more children, I was overjoyed and terrified to be pregnant again. My water broke at barely 28 weeks, and I was hospitalized to give my baby more time to develop. He was born about a week later at 29 weeks, weighing just three pounds, and faced several serious health challenges in those early days. We both came through with the best possible outcomes, and today he's a healthy young boy—but that experience, too, left its mark.

Through it all, I kept wishing there had been someone to help mothers like me through experiences like these. That wish became my calling. I began researching everything doulas could do to help women have better, more supported experiences—and it led me here, to this work I now feel honored to do.

Practice Philosophy

My philosophy is simple: the mother is the priority, and her needs come first. Everything I do centers on making sure the birthing person feels cared for, supported, and never overlooked during one of the most vulnerable and transformative times of her life.

Having walked my own challenging journey into motherhood, I know how much it matters to have someone truly in your corner. I bring that hard-won empathy to every family I support, so that no mother has to feel alone or unheard.

Overall, my goal is to keep your needs at the center, offering steady, compassionate support so you feel seen, heard, and genuinely cared for throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey.
