Scope of Practice

Doulas provide non-clinical physical, emotional, and informational support. Doulas shall:

  • Stay strictly within the recognized scope of doula practice and the scope defined by their Raya contract.
  • Not diagnose conditions, prescribe or administer medication, perform clinical or medical procedures, or provide medical advice.
  • Not make clinical decisions on behalf of a client or substitute their judgment for that of a licensed medical provider.
  • Encourage clients to consult their licensed healthcare providers for medical questions and decisions, and support — never override — the client's informed choices.
  • Accurately represent their role, training, and credentials, and never misrepresent themselves as a licensed medical professional.
