Backup Doula Coverage

Back to handbook

Why Backup Matters

Backup coverage is essential for:

  • Birth attendance reliability
  • Patient trust and safety
  • Program continuity

No doula can guarantee availability at all times. Backup planning is expected and normalized.

Backup Requirements

Backup doulas must:

  • Meet Raya credentialing requirements
  • Be briefed on the patient's preferences and care context
  • Be documented in the Raya platform

When Backup Is Activated

Backup coverage should be activated if the primary doula:

  • Is ill or injured
  • Has a conflicting birth or emergency
  • Is unreachable during labor
  • Cannot safely or reasonably attend

If Backup Cannot Be Secured

  • Notify Raya Health immediately
  • Raya will assist in identifying alternative coverage
  • Clear communication with the patient is required

Backup planning protects patients, doulas, and the care team and ensures no one is left unsupported.
